Reduced 30GB of images to under 3GB

Performance

70% faster product page load times

Storage

Over 90% reduction in image file size

Efficiency

Lossless optimization via compression algorithms

Deployment

Zero downtime image replacement via SSH

Challenges

  • Massive WooCommerce image library exceeding 30GB
  • High-resolution product photos slowing page loads
  • No prior image dimension standardization
  • Server performance bottlenecks during image retrieval

Solutions

  • Cloned the production site to a staging environment for testing
  • Applied professional-grade image compression software
  • Standardized all product image dimensions for responsive layouts
  • Replaced optimized files directly on the live server via SSH
  • Implemented caching and CSS/JS minification for improved speed

Results

  • Image library reduced by over 90% without visible quality loss
  • Average product page load time decreased from 6s to under 2s
  • Significant improvement in Google PageSpeed and Lighthouse scores
  • Optimized infrastructure ready for scalable WooCommerce performance

Project Overview

The Follio WooCommerce website faced significant performance issues due to large unoptimized product images — with total media storage exceeding 30GB and individual images reaching up to 7MB each.
This project focused on improving load times, optimizing bandwidth, and ensuring a smoother shopping experience across all devices.

Optimization Process

1. Cloning & Staging Setup

A full clone of the production site was deployed on a staging server to ensure all optimization procedures could be safely tested before implementation.

2. Image Optimization

  • Used lossless compression algorithms to remove imperceptible pixels.
  • Resized oversized images to exact display dimensions.
  • Reduced average image size from 5–7MB to 80–300KB.
  • Retained file names and URLs to maintain existing WooCommerce product links and SEO integrity.

3. Deployment via SSH

Optimized images were transferred back to the live server via secure SSH deployment, ensuring seamless overwriting of originals without downtime.

4. Site Speed Improvements

  • Implemented browser caching and GZIP compression.
  • Minified CSS and JS assets.
  • Improved database response time with query caching and cleanup.

Results & Impact

Metric Before After Improvement
Total Image Storage ~30 GB ~2.8 GB >90% Reduction
Avg Product Page Load 6.2 s 1.8 s ~71% Faster
Google PageSpeed Score 54 91 +37 Points
Bounce Rate (post-update) 62% 38% -24% Improvement

Outcome

“Anton’s optimization made our WooCommerce store incredibly fast — pages that took six seconds now load instantly.”
Follio Site Owner

The optimization delivered immediate results, improving user experience, SEO ranking, and conversion rates while dramatically lowering hosting costs.
This project became a foundation for Anton’s later WordPress performance audit and recovery services, emphasizing measurable speed gains and efficiency-driven workflows.
